403 Forbidden error

2014-01-28

Error 403 (Forbidden, access denied) usually has one of these causes:

  1. There is no index file in the site directory. The home page must be named index.php or index.html (lowercase: file names on the server are case-sensitive). The list of index files is set in "WWW domains" -> site -> the "Index files" field.
  2. Wrong permissions on files or directories. Directories need at least 0755, files 0644. Change permissions in the "File manager" with the "Permissions" button.
  3. The site files are in the wrong directory. The site root is shown in "WWW domains" -> site -> "Document root" (default www/<domain>).
  4. Access is denied in the .htaccess file. Try renaming it temporarily, for example to .htaccess.off.
  5. The requested file name starts with a dot (.env, .git, etc.): such files are blocked by the "Block dotfiles" switch.
